STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President George W. Bush announced today the designation of a Presidential Delegation to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China on September 6, 2008.

The Honorable James B. Peake, M.D., Secretary of Veterans Affairs, will lead the delegation.

Embassy statement on August 9 attack on American tourists

We can confirm reports that one American was killed and a second seriously injured today in what appears to be a senseless act of violence.  A Chinese tour guide was also injured by the assailant, a Chinese man from Zhejiang Province.  The American victims’ adult daughter was with them, but was not injured. (complete text)

Bush Reflects on Solid Foundation of U.S.-China Relations

The new U.S. Embassy complex in Beijing reflects the solid foundation underpinning U.S.-Chinese relations, President Bush says, and "is a commitment to strengthen that foundation for years to come."
